Frequently Asked Questions # 22
22. Do I need an Employer Identification Number
(EIN)? If so, how do I obtain it?
The
Employer Identification Number is essentially
the social security number for your business. An
Employer Identification Number is a nine-digit
number assigned to sole proprietors,
partnerships, corporations, estates, trusts, and
other entities for filing and reporting
purposes. Every business with employees has to
have an Employer Identification Number as do
businesses that need to collect and remit sales
tax. However, even a sole proprietor might need
to have an Employer Identification Number to
open a business account at a bank. Otherwise,
sole proprietors can use their social security
number for tax reporting purposes. You can apply
for an EIN by telephone, fax, or by mail.
For
more information on obtaining an EIN, contact
the IRS service center for the state of Arkansas
